Description: In estimating mortality rates from the experience of a life insurance company or employee-benefit plan, it is expedient, because of the movement into and out of the covered group on dates other than birthdays or policy anniversaries, to make some assumption about mortality over a fractional part of a year of age. This paper describes and develops the concept of 'exposure' with regard to the more commonly known methods of estimating the rate of mortality, and proposes a fourth methodology. Description: The paper gives two criteria for fit and uses two different criteria to transform an initial graduation into one with better fit. It is shown that the two sets of criteria give the same transformation. The mathematical relationships between the two sets of criteria are then derived. It is clear from those relationships that when one set of criteria is small, the other set is small [but reasonably the same]. Some general comments on various measures of fit are made.

Description: The object of this paper is to present several aspects on the valuation of bonds which are not usually in textbooks but very important to consider in countries with inflation.
